Our Success Stories

Case Study: Taobao Buy+ (E-Commerce)

DGene worked closely with Alibaba on its ambitious “AR project to provide commercial Light Field modelling for Alibaba’s merchant partners. Buy+ utilizes AR technology to bring consumers a futuristic shopping experience like no other; an exemplification of the concept of experiential retail. With Buy+, the expression, “what you see is what you get” is set to become reality. On Buy+, items for sale are displayed as interactive 3D holograms, and users will have access to all relevant information, from product ratings and comments to exact specifications. In addition, users will be able to interact with these products by giving commands through various gestures and movements.

Taobao Buy+ illustrates the immense potential of AR to transform the retail sector. Through AR, retailers can inculcate a new relationship between consumer and product, one characterised by interaction. By incorporating AR, consumers will be able to interact with their desired products like never before, potentially opening the door to an entirely new world of e-commerce possibilities.

DGene Visual Solutions

Case Study: Pippa’s Pan (Entertainment)

DGene has cooperated extensively with the American performing arts and modelling communities to provide them with innovative three-dimensional Light Field technology for film production. The VR movie Pippa’s Pan – one of the first of its kind – was filmed with the help of DGene’s light field capture technology. The film was a success, and DGene’s technology was integral in reproducing the most realistic characters and scenes, fully capturing the characters’ emotional expressions. Pippa’s Pan was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, marking the beginning of a new era in film and entertainment – one featuring novel AR/VR technology.

Case Study: Opera Show (Entertainment)

DGene’s light field acquisition system proved crucial in Beijing Opera actor Lan Tian’s AR-assisted opera performance, marking another breakthrough in the performing arts by integrating DGene’s technology into the age-old traditional art of Chinese opera. DGene has made it possible to bring the old and new together, performing opera classics in a futuristic, hyper-modern format.

About the company

DGene, formerly known as Plex-VR Digital Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., is a technology startup developing Light Field-based technologies for museum exhibition, e-commerce, education, virtual tourism and remote medicine applications. Founded in Shanghai in 2016, the company now generates US$100,000 in revenue per employee and has received a total of US$15.3 million in funding as of 2019, with Alibaba among its investors. The company now has a research and development (R&D) centre in Silicon Valley. DGene’s AR/VR solutions have myriad applications across multiple industries, including but not limited to e-commerce, digital entertainment (Internet, video, and film), real estate (home design, interior decoration, and virtual house inspection), education (remote or online courses), and healthcare (remote diagnosis, operation surveillance, and adjuvant therapy).

The rapidly growing augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) industry looks set to be the next big thing in tech and entertainment. In 2018, the burgeoning global augmented and virtual reality market was valued at a considerable US$26.7 billion, and is projected to reach approximately US$814.7 billion by 2025, according to Zion Market Research. What began life as merely a gaming novelty has evolved to become a technology worth billions of dollars, with promising applications across a range of sectors. Take for instance the potential medical applications of AR/VR – the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Korean conglomerate Samsung are currently evaluating VR for pain reduction and therapeutic purposes. In addition, VR is allowing doctors at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital to better understand a patient’s anatomy pre-surgery, thus mitigating risks. AR/VR also has numerous applications in e-commerce, engineering, and construction. AR/VR has far outgrown its niche as a gaming gimmick, and DGene is well poised to become a pioneer in the wider adoption of augmented and virtual reality. What was once child’s play has, quite literally, become serious business.
